Summer Learning
At St. Louise Parish School, we believe that summer is a wonderful time for fun and family adventures. It's also an excellent opportunity to keep young minds active and engaged. Research indicates that students can lose at least one month of instruction during the summer break. To help maintain and enhance academic skills, we recommend regular engagement in reading, math, keyboarding, and coding activities throughout June, July, and August.
Summer Reading (Grades K-8): Daily reading is encouraged for all students. For those entering grades 6-8, specific novels are assigned, accompanied by written assignments due on the first day of language arts class in September.
Summer Math (Grades 1-8): To prevent the "summer slump" in math skills, we suggest regular practice using resources like Khan Academy and Big Ideas Math. Some teachers may also provide math packets or recommend purchasing workbooks for consistent practice.
Summer Keyboarding (Grades 3-7): Proficiency in typing is essential in today's digital learning environment. We ask students to practice keyboarding at least four days a week using designated online programs. Goals for words per minute (WPM) are set for each grade level to ensure progress.
Summer Coding (Grades 1-6): To foster technological skills, we assign coding activities for students entering grades 1-6.
By integrating these activities into your child's summer routine, you can help them retain and build upon the knowledge they've gained during the school year. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child's continuous learning journey.
