The St. Louise School Music Program, led by Mr. Matt Turner, MAT, is dedicated to inspiring a love for music in every student by providing a comprehensive music education that includes singing, movement, instrument playing, and performance.  The program nurtures creativity, self-expression, and cultural appreciation, helping students develop confidence and teamwork skills.  By engaging students in both individual and group activities the program aims to cultivate lifelong musical skills and appreciation for the arts.
 
Program Overview: 
  • The program includes weekly music classes for all grade levels, from Pre-K through 8th Grade, with increasing class duration as the student progresses.
  • Performance opportunities are integral for all grades, including a Christmas concert, Spring Arts Evening, and helping lead mass at various points during the year.
  • Students from 4th through 8th Grade are welcome to join the school choir, which practices weekly and performs regularly for school masses and other events.
  • Students of all ages may join the school band, which meets after school as a club.
  • A music elective (drums, guitar, etc.) will be offered for middle school students.
 
Curriculum Overview: 
  • Pre-K: Two 20-minute classes per week focusing on basic musical concepts through singing, movement, and storytelling.
  • Grades K-5: One 40-minute class per week where students explore vocal skills, rhythm, musical literacy, composition, and basic instrument playing.
  • Grades 6-8: One 45-minute class per week, emphasizing more complex musical skills, vocal participation in school liturgies, and connections to real-world issues.
 
Essential Learnings: 
  • Students will acquire skills in vocal performance, music reading, listening, music composition, and instrument playing.
  • Students will learn to perform confidently both individually and as part of a group.
  • Students will respond to the music through movement, writing, and visual display.
  • Students will connect music to other academic subjects and the world around them.
